Detection of Leishmania SPP, in Canines and Species of The Genus Lutzomyia in a Rural Area of Villavicencio, Venezuela / Adolfo Vásquez Trujillo.

In 2005, before the apperance of new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis in humana and canines in rural area of Villavicencio village The Reforma (Meta), we conducted a study to detect leishmania infections in dogs and lutzomyia present in the area using PCR. We scraped active lesions in 6 dogs for direct diagnosis and collected insects in domiciliary y area and in the forest around 40 houses using CDC light traps between 1800 and 2200 h. We processed samples from the 6 canines and 181 pools of sand flies (1-3 females per pool), for the PCR, we used universal primers for genus leishminia OLI and OL2, for subgenera B1 and B2 and species- specific sequences. A dog sample was positve for leishmania (subgenus viannia) guyanensis.
